Sure, there are times when a fleece jacket is perfect, but to me, soft shell jackets seem to be a lot more versatile than your basic fleece. The only problem is that all the really good soft shell jackets are super expensive. Most of them are in the $200 to $300 range, but there are still some that are even more expensive than that! From time to time you can come across generic type soft shell jackets that look like the expensive ones, but with out the label. These tend to just be for show and style. Rarely do they offer as much protection and durability as the real deal.

It really is a great bargain buy for those who want a soft shell jacket, but can’t afford a $200+ price tag. I have been an ever growing fan of REI gear here of lately and this jacket just solidifies how much I appreciate REIs quality gear that is well priced.

One thing soft shell jackets are popular for is protection from the wind. This jacket offers protection from winds up to 18 mile per hour. While that isn’t as high as some other soft shell jackets, its not a bad start. And for the price, it is down right amazing.

Soft shell jackets are great even for summer time use. Fleece jackets tend to make a bit to warm at night around camp. I have said it once already, but I will say it again; when it comes to the REI Signal Peak Soft-Shell Jacket you really get the best bang for your buck.
