Mountain Hardwear Sprite 1 Tent – Single person tent with room to spare.

Single person tents are great for backpackers and bicyclers. They are light, provide a variety of setup options, and are realitivlky cheap compared to multi person tents. The only major draw back to most of them is that they leave little in the way of internal room. Now, I don’t expect to be able to keep my pack and other possessions in the tent, but it would be nice to have some room to store my must haves without rolling over them in the middle of the night. Apparently, the guys at Mountain Hardwear feel the same way. The Mountain Hardwear Sprite 1 Tent gives you plenty of room to store your essentials inside the tent.

The Mountain Hardwear Sprite 1 Tent follows the same basic outline as most single person tents. It is long, sleek, and has no head room. The unique feature is the nook that has been created. This nook gives the Mountain Hardwear Sprite 1 Tent the small, but much needed, extra room in a single person tent. The area is perfect for flashlights, books, water bottles, and any other nighttime essentials.

My only other gripe with single person tents is that they don’t offer any vestibule space. Its not their fault, there is just no way to add enough material to the tent and it still be light and functional. That is, unless you have a small nook built into the tent. When combined with the rainfly, the nook creates a vestibule perfectly sized for storing your backpack in.

The quick & dirty:

Where you can get one:
Amazon: $150

Why they rock:

  • Two-pole, non-freestanding design saves weight; tent’s pole structure is incorporated into vestibule for aerodynamic performance
  • Features a large door and a mesh canopy walls for excellent ventilation and views during warm nights
  • Dry-entry vestibule design prevents water from dripping inside tent when vestibule is open, improving livability
  • 7001 aluminum poles use Atlas pole connectors for corrosion- and dent-resistance, plus they’re completely field serviceable
  • Pole clips save weight, make setup a cinch and allow superior ventilation between rainfly and tent
  • Other technical features include reflective guy-out loops, reflective zipper pulls, welded guy clip anchors and Super-light™ buckles and webbing
  • Pitch Light Option: For an ultralight shelter, pitch the rainfly, poles and footprint (sold separately) without the tent body

Seat-of-the-pants rating: 10 out of 10

I must say, I think other single person tents should follow in the footsteps of the Mountain Hardwear Sprite 1 Tent. The tiny amount of extra added weight is little when you think about how much the weight is giving you in return. I will gladly carry a few more ounces for a vestibule and some extra floor space.
