You know that prickly-sweat feeling you get as you place your luggage on the big airport scale during check-in? That moment when you admit you probably really do need to join Overpackers Anonymous?
Thought so.
I try–honestly I do–to travel light. But 23 kilos? 50 pounds? How is that possibly fair to those of us who require our shoes to match our outfits? But there it is: the airlines require us to live with increasingly meager luggage limits. And it causes me anxiety every time I fly.
Or it used to. While typically not one for gadgets, I recently put down $30 CDN for a Heys digital luggage scale and said goodbye forever to obscene surcharges and/or frantic airport off-loading.
It’s small—about the length of a pencil—and extremely lightweight (allegedly the world’s lightest), with a large hook dangling from its middle. You just hook your luggage on, lift and voila! The tell-tale numbers appear in either pounds or kilos, accurate to within a few ounces. It can weigh up to 110 pounds (50 kg)—not that you should ever allow your suitcase to reach that danger zone.
It’s available from major retailers, luggage shops and online. You can probably find it for less than I paid if you shop around a bit. Whatever.  Never again breaking into an anxious sweat during check-in? Priceless…
