A harness, belay device, locking carabiner and chalk bag in one box is still the sensible way to start climbing, and Black Diamond still sells a Momentum package built on the same idea.
Why a package rather than picking each part: the items are matched, it is cheaper than buying separately, and it removes the beginner's problem of not knowing which belay device works with which rope. For a first set it is the right call.
What has changed since this review: assisted-braking belay devices became mainstream and are now what many gyms and instructors prefer over a plain tube device, because they add a margin when a belayer's attention lapses. If you are buying now, consider whether the package's device is what your climbing partners and local gym use.
The fit rules are unchanged and are the whole thing: the waist belt sits above the hips and cannot be pulled down over them; adjustable leg loops on a first harness so it works over summer shorts and winter layers; four gear loops is plenty.
Two safety notes worth repeating. Buy new, never second-hand, since you cannot see a harness's history. And note the retirement guidance: manufacturers typically give up to ten years from manufacture even unused, much less with regular use, and immediately after any significant fall.
One piece of history relevant to this exact line: Black Diamond recalled part of its Speed harness range in 2006 over incorrectly threaded buckles. Recalls here are rare and handled properly, and the lesson is to check for notices on anything that has been sitting in a cupboard rather than to distrust the brand.
